Electrolysis cells

-
For pupil use, requiring only small quantities of electrolyte
-
Comprises glass cylinder (75mm x 25mm) the lower end of which accommodates a tight-fitting rubber stopper fitted with 2 carbon electrodes
-
Contact with each electrode is made through a crocodile clip; accidental short circuiting of the electrodes is prevented by a strip of insulating material set into the rubber between the electrodes
-
Evolved gases are collected in two rimless glass test tubes (75mm x 10mm) suspended over electrodes by means of a wood strip and rubber bands
-
Requires 6V (maximum) power supply
-
Note: If dilute sulfuric acid is used as the electrolyte, the carbon electrodes should be replaced by steel wires (XJR-550-N) mounted for convenience in a separate stopper
