3cm Microwave System
3cm Microwave System
All self-contained; no external apparatus required or setting up complications. The transmitter has its own internal modulator with variable frequency. The receiver has its own internal amplifier, loudspeaker and gain control. The probe receiver has its own internal amplifier, gain and sensitivity controls and loudspeaker. This complete system provides a rugged set of units to enable students to investigate the wave properties of 10GHz (3cm) microwaves.

The Transmitter : It utilizes a Schottky diode oscillator module feeding a tuned waveguide and horn to give a directional microwave beam. The beam is modulated with a variable frequency audio signal which can be adjusted by the control on the top panel. Power is from a mains plug-top unit (supplied). Transmitter measures 110 x 110 x 150 mm high

The Receiver : It uses a plate antenna which gives high sensitivity over a broad area. Output is to an internal loudspeaker and power is derived from a mains plug-top unit (supplied). A control allows the user to adjust the sensitivity to cater for different circumstances and distances. Receiver measures 60 x 110 x 150 mm high.

The Probe Detector : It gives a localised, precision receiver which finds particular application in identifying areas of peak and low amplitude in interference, reflection and refraction experiments. There are two controls, one for sensitivity and the other for volume of output to the internal loudspeaker. Power is from the same type of plug-top supply as used by the receiver unit (above). An additional power supply unit can be supplied if requested. Probe detector 130 x 80 x 130 mm high. Output can be monitored by a CRO connected to the 4mm sockets for quantitative measurements.

A Set of Accessories : Comprising 2 metal reflection/diffraction plates with base. Acrylic reflection/transmission plate with base 1 narrow metal plate to provide “Young's Slits”

A working system requires: The transmitter unit + The wide angle receiver to do qualitative demonstrations of microwave communications and wave effects such as reflection, absorption, refraction, standing waves and interference. To carry out quantitative measurements the Probe Receiver gives more precision results over a shorter range. Use all three units to cover all aspects of the topic.
